Goals
Students interested in this service learning opportunity will work with staff and assist with the elderly population suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s. Public health efforts designed to foster awareness of the signs of cognitive impairment among older adults are needed, as early intervention may forestall further decline in cognitive functioning (Chapman et al., 2006). As future medical professionals it is important that you understand and can recognize the impact that dementia and Alzheimer’s has on the population.
Students will be able to participate in a variety of duties including: help organize/set up games and activities, participating in different activities, use any talents (I.e. music or dance), and decorate for the holiday seasons. There is also another area in the facility called the Memory Care where students will be encouraged to just sit and talk with the residents.
Students interested in this opportunity will need to fill out an application, submit a background test, and get a TB test.
