Goals

Students interested in this service learning opportunity will help to eradicate hunger and malnutrition among the elderly population in the community. It is estimated that nearly 10% of the elderly population suffer from malnourishment (Furman, 2006). When the Cedar City and St. George senior population is taken into consideration there are potentially 500 and 1500 seniors suffering from malnutrition, respectively. Malnourishment leads to further health disparities which place added cost and burden on the community.

This position can be on Tuesday, Wednesday or Fridays from around 10:30 A.M. until 12:20 P.M. as a fill-in driver for drivers that cannot deliver on their assigned day. You would be delivering a fresh cooked lunch meal to the elderly who are home bound or cannot get out of their house on their own. It is a very rewarding opportunity as the people are really appreciative for this great service and are in need of it. A vehicle is provided for you with automatic transmission.

Must have a Utah Driver’s License. Volunteers also must get a background and drug screening check arranged and paid for by the county. A volunteer is needed for the Cedar City Senior Center to help seal (plastic covering over the meal tray before it is delivered as Meals on Wheels for the elderly. It only requires approximately one hour of service from 10:00-11:00 A.M. once a week or more if you would like. No special skills or experience necessary. Group volunteering is allowed.
