Goals
THE PILLOWCASE PROJECT
The Pillowcase Project will help create a generation of children who understand the science of hazards, are empowered to take action preparing for emergencies and are excited to help create a prepared community by sharing what they have learned with family and friends. Volunteers will prepare a 40-60- minute classroom presentation and present in 3rd – 5th grade classrooms in the area. (They want 2 volunteers each time you present, so do it with a friend!) It is a standardized curriculum that you will be trained on. There is a 6-hour online training that is required, but that counts as volunteer hours and the Red Cross will provide all of the tools (training, posters, and teaching kit, and then pillowcases/workbooks for the children).
HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN
Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires. A fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Annually, home fires caused 2,500 deaths. The Home Fire Campaign aims to save lives, reduce injuries and build more resilient communities by raising awareness, facilitating preventative actions, and fostering community participation. We install FREE smoke alarms along with an educational component. Volunteers install FREE smoke alarms to residents in the area that have signed up as well as discussing with residents how to prevent fires and how to escape from their house of one were to occur.
You can do one hour or 25 hours of service with us, but we need you! Sign up with us and help save lives!
