American Red Cross

Goals
THE PILLOWCASE PROJECT
The Pillowcase Project will help create a generation of children who understand the science of hazards, are empowered to take action preparing for emergencies and are excited to help create a prepared community by sharing what they have learned with family and friends. Volunteers will prepare a 40-60- minute classroom presentation and present in 3rd – 5th grade classrooms in the area. (They want 2 volunteers each time you present, so do it with a friend!) It is a standardized curriculum that you will be trained on. There is a 6-hour online training that is required, but that counts as volunteer hours and the Red Cross will provide all of the tools (training, posters, and teaching kit, and then pillowcases/workbooks for the children).

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN
Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires. A fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Annually, home fires caused 2,500 deaths. The Home Fire Campaign aims to save lives, reduce injuries and build more resilient communities by raising awareness, facilitating preventative actions, and fostering community participation. We install FREE smoke alarms along with an educational component. Volunteers install FREE smoke alarms to residents in the area that have signed up as well as discussing with residents how to prevent fires and how to escape from their house of one were to occur.

You can do one hour or 25 hours of service with us, but we need you! Sign up with us and help save lives!

Bureau of Land Management (No short term volunteer opportunities)

The Price Field Office (PFO) is located at the northwestern edge of the Colorado Plateau–the gateway to the red-rock country and the San Rafael Swell. The Swell has been described as the jagged remains of a dinosaur backbone, an exposed sandstone coral reef, and a stone saw blade. No matter how you describe this place, it is desolate, but beautiful country.

Activities that can be enjoyed on public lands around the PFO include, river float trips, camping, hiking and biking. Traveling east, you will find the Green River, a premiere river trip in Utah’s deepest canyon that runs through Desolation and Gray Canyons. Nine-Mile Canyon just west of the Green River is a major representative area of the prehistoric Fremont Culture where one can see many panels of rock art.

The Cleveland Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry contains the densest concentration of Jurassic aged bones ever found and shouldn’t be missed. The area is rich in resources such as; oil, gas, coal, uranium, gypsum, and a host of others. Public lands in the PFO management area is home to three Wild Horse and Burro Management Areas and the largest wilderness study area in the contiguous 48 states.
